How to sort columns in Infragistics WinGrid

This code demonstrates how WinGrid allows the user to sort on both single and multiple columns by clicking on the column headers. The UltraWinGrid allows user to sort by setting the .HeaderClickAction property to either .SortSingle or .SortMulti.

Below are the steps to achieve the same

1. Adding using/imports directives

How to choose column chooser feature in Infragistics Wingrid

This code demonstrates using the Column Chooser functionality to display a dialog similar to Microsoft Outlook's Field Chooser where the user can choose columns to display in the WinGrid.

Now, lets start with the step by step process of how we can achieve the same

1. Add using/imports directives

2. The WinGrid has in-built RowSelectorheaderstyle property to choose the column button which will display a button in the row selector area. You can change the appearance of it by RowSelectorHeaderAppearance property.

3. You can also have your own user interface for displaying the column chooser. UltraGridColumnChooser is derived from .NET Control class. It displays list of columns & implements drag-n-drop functionality. ColumnChooserDialog derives from .NET Form class. It simply embeds UltragridColumnChooser inset it.

This code shows how to obtain a card view layout with the help of Infragistics WinGrid. WinGrid helps you to easily print and export your data in the form of excel or PDF document.

1. Bind grid to a DataSource (Same as we do in usual Gridview)

2. Now we need to obtain a card view layout which can be achieved by properties of Displaylayout object

Draw line on Windows Form

Drawing simple lines on a Windows form is not easier as there is no Line control. Still you can make a line by using a Panel control and setting its width or height to a few pixels. But if you want a real line, the secret is in understanding the correct set of library methods you need.

To draw a line with code you need to use GDI +(i.e. the .NET graphics library)

DirectCast better than CType

DirectCast

performs better than using CType when casting from an object to a more specific type because it does not use runtime helper functions.

The below example shows way to cast from type Object to another type with VB:

The DirectCast statement in this example casts the sender variable that is of type Object to a TextBox control in order to access the TextBox properties.

You can use DirectCast only when casting from a type to a related but more specific type, called a derived type.

For example, you can use DirectCast to cast from type Control to type TextBox because TextBox is derived from Control. You cannot use DirectCast to convert from an Integer to a String type because String is not derived from Integer. DirectCast can always be used to cast from type Object to any other type because all other types derive from type Object.

This code demonstrates how to Add/Insert, Update, delete, edit in Devexpress aspxgridview. Sorting and changing position of columns is by default enabled. Only to disable it you need to specify.

Note : You can download Devexpress controls from www.devexpress.com

I have tried this with versions 9.2.3 and 9.3.2. For example purpose I have used connection strings and queries in same file but for you, you need to retrieve it from web.config file and also use stored procedures.

Pivoting INSERT - Oracle

Pivoting is an operation in which you need to build a transformation such that each record from any input stream, such as, a nonrelational database table, must be converted into multiple records for a more relational database table environment.

•Suppose you receive a set of sales records from a nonrelational database table, SALES_SOURCE_DATA in the following format:

EMPLOYEE_ID,WEEK_ID,SALES_MON,SALES_TUE,SALES_WED, SALES_THUR,SALES_FRI

•You would want to store these records in the SALES_INFO table in a more typical relational format:

EMPLOYEE_ID, WEEK, SALES

•Using a pivoting INSERT, convert the set of sales records from the nonrelational database table to relational format.

Spool [pathdirectory]

Spool will record all your statements in a text file which will be created in the path specified by you in pathdirectory.

Until and unless you swtich off the spool it won't record your statements but a file will be created in that path.

For example, I write

SQL> spool C:\temp.txt (temp file will be created in C drive)

SQL> select * from tablename1 (Output will be generated)

SQL> select * from tablename2 (Output will be generated)

etc...

SQL> spool off (All records after your file was created will be recorded with errors/messages/outputs/results etc.)

Double-click the title bar of the window which will undock and you can now easily work with it. When you are finished with the window, simply double-click the title bar of the window again, and it will automatically re-dock where it had been.

If you mess up your windows layout using this, then simply reset it back to your default windows layout by selecting Window -> reset window layout from the menu. After you confirm the operation, the window layout will be reset to default.

1. What is Cursor?

Cursor is a database object used by applications to manipulate data in a set on a row-by-row basis, instead of the typical SQL commands that operate on all the rows in the set at one time.In order to work with a cursor we need to perform some steps in the following order:

• Declare cursor
• Open cursor
• Fetch row from the cursor
• Process fetched row
• Close cursor
• Deallocate cursor

2. What is Collation?
Collation refers to a set of rules that determine how data is sorted and compared. Character data is sorted using rules that define the correct character sequence, with options for specifying case sensitivity, accent marks, kana character types and character width

3. What is Difference between Function and Stored Procedure?
UDF can be used in the SQL statements anywhere in the WHERE/HAVING/SELECT section where as Stored procedures cannot be. UDFs that return tables can be treated as another rowset. This can be used in JOINs with other tables. Inline UDF’s can be thought of as views that take parameters and can be used in JOINs and other Rowset operations.

4. What is sub-query? Explain properties of sub-query?
Sub-queries are often referred to as sub-selects, as they allow a SELECT statement to be executed arbitrarily within the body of another SQL statement. A sub-query is executed by enclosing it in a set of parentheses. Sub-queries are generally used to return a single row as an atomic value, though they may be used to compare values against multiple rows with the IN keyword.
A subquery is a SELECT statement that is nested within another T-SQL statement. A subquery SELECT statement if executed independently of the T-SQL statement, in which it is nested, will return a resultset. Meaning a subquery SELECT statement can standalone and is not depended on the statement in which it is nested. A subquery SELECT statement can return any number of values, and can be found in, the column list of a SELECT statement, a FROM, GROUP BY, HAVING, and/or ORDER BY clauses of a T-SQL statement. A Subquery can also be used as a parameter to a function call. Basically a subquery can be used anywhere an expression can be used.

5. What are different Types of Join?
Cross Join
A cross join that does not have a WHERE clause produces the Cartesian product of the tables involved in the join. The size of a Cartesian product result set is the number of rows in the first table multiplied by the number of rows in the second table. The common example is when company wants to combine each product with a pricing table to analyze each product at each price.

Inner Join
A join that displays only the rows that have a match in both joined tables is known as inner Join. This is the default type of join in the Query and View Designer.

Outer Join
A join that includes rows even if they do not have related rows in the joined table is an Outer Join. You can create three different outer join to specify the unmatched rows to be included:

• Left Outer Join: In Left Outer Join all rows in the first-named table i.e. “left” table, which appears leftmost in the JOIN clause are included. Unmatched rows in the right table do not appear.
• Right Outer Join: In Right Outer Join all rows in the second-named table i.e. “right” table, which appears rightmost in the JOIN clause are included. Unmatched rows in the left table are not included.
• Full Outer Join: In Full Outer Join all rows in all joined tables are included, whether they are matched or not.

Self Join
This is a particular case when one table joins to itself, with one or two aliases to avoid confusion. A self join can be of any type, as long as the joined tables are the same. A self join is rather unique in that it involves a relationship with only one table. The common example is when company has a hierarchal reporting structure whereby one member of staff reports to another. Self Join can be Outer Join or Inner Join.

6. What are primary keys and foreign keys?
Primary keys are the unique identifiers for each row. They must contain unique values and cannot be null. Due to their importance in relational databases, Primary keys are the most fundamental of all keys and constraints. A table can have only one Primary key.
Foreign keys are both a method of ensuring data integrity and a manifestation of the relationship between tables.

7. What is User Defined Functions? What kind of User-Defined Functions can be created?
User-Defined Functions allow defining its own T-SQL functions that can accept 0 or more parameters and return a single scalar data value or a table data type.
Different Kinds of User-Defined Functions created are:

Scalar User-Defined Function
A Scalar user-defined function returns one of the scalar data types. Text, ntext, image and timestamp data types are not supported. These are the type of user-defined functions that most developers are used to in other programming languages. You pass in 0 to many parameters and you get a return value.

Inline Table-Value User-Defined Function
An Inline Table-Value user-defined function returns a table data type and is an exceptional alternative to a view as the user-defined function can pass parameters into a T-SQL select command and in essence provide us with a parameterized, non-updateable view of the underlying tables.

Multi-statement Table-Value User-Defined Function
A Multi-Statement Table-Value user-defined function returns a table and is also an exceptional alternative to a view as the function can support multiple T-SQL statements to build the final result where the view is limited to a single SELECT statement. Also, the ability to pass parameters into a TSQL select command or a group of them gives us the capability to in essence create a parameterized, non-updateable view of the data in the underlying tables. Within the create function command you must define the table structure that is being returned. After creating this type of user-defined function, It can be used in the FROM clause of a T-SQL command unlike the behavior found when using a stored procedure which can also return record sets.

8. What is Identity?
Identity (or AutoNumber) is a column that automatically generates numeric values. A start and increment value can be set, but most DBA leave these at 1. A GUID column also generates numbers; the value of this cannot be controlled. Identity/GUID columns do not need to be indexed.

9. What is DataWarehousing?
• Subject-oriented, meaning that the data in the database is organized so that all the data elements relating to the same real-world event or object are linked together;
• Time-variant, meaning that the changes to the data in the database are tracked and recorded so that reports can be produced showing changes over time;
• Non-volatile, meaning that data in the database is never over-written or deleted, once committed, the data is static, read-only, but retained for future reporting.
• Integrated, meaning that the database contains data from most or all of an organization’s operational applications, and that this data is made consistent.

Themes in ASP.Net 2.0 :

A theme is a collection of settings that define the look of controls and web pages. Themes are applied across all the pages in a Web application to maintain a consistent appearance.

A theme is a file with .skin extension that contains property settings for individual controls such as a Button, textbox or a Label control. You can either define skins for each control in different skin files or you can define skins for all the controls in a single file.

Themes are of two types –

Page - A theme which can be applied to only a single page of the website is called a Page theme.

A Page theme contains the control skins, style sheets, graphic files, and other resources inside the subfolders of App_Themes folder. For different themes separate subfolders are created in the App_Themes folder.

Global – A global theme is a theme that is applied to all the webpages of any website. It includes property settings, style sheet settings, and graphics. This theme allows you to maintain all the websites on the same web server and to define the same style for all the pages of all websites.

Global themes are placed in the Themes folder and can be accessed by an website.

Steps to create themes :

Right click on Web application’s name in solution explorer and first select Add ASP.Net Folder option -> Themes
This will add folder named App_Themes with one subfolder named Theme1 inside it.
Right click Theme1 folder -> Add New Item -> Skin File (I have named it as Theme.skin). Add following code in it.

Binding XML to Datagrid :

In this code we’ll create XML and bind it to Datagrid control.

Add XML file to project (By right click on project à Add à Add New Item à XML file)

4. VS.NET tries to come up with the schema for the XML file based on its content. You can open up the schema file and graphically edit or change its definition by code.

By default, the Create XML Schema option defines all the fields as String. You can change it in this GUI or directly in the code representing this schema.
Now add a button called “Load XML” to a webform which will populate data to gridview from xml file.
